Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
The registration date (15Nov58) for the sheet music is 3 months after the film's registration date (1Aug58). There are a number of court decisions that hold that the music is published in as much as it is included in the film and is part of the film's copyright. Taking that into account, the later registration of the music as printed sheet music is a separate, derivative copyright of already published film music that has no bearing on the public domain status of the film.

Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
I don't know the registration date for
Devil Girl from Mars since its copyright wasn't renewed, but its music was registered on 1954-06-04 (see
this post). I'm wondering if what is true for
Night of the Blood Beast is true for it, so I or someone else can upload it. Any help will be appreciated!

Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
The movie was registered in 1955 (LP4658). Since the music was registered in 1954, the movie isn't PD.

Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
Then if that's the case, a lot of the same music was used not only in the movie ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES, but in *every* ROCKY JONES SPACE RANGER episode. Would those need to be pulled as well?

Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
As Emily Litella used to say on SNL, "Never mind."
I checked "Alexander Lazlo" at the USCO and got over 500 hits for his music! Most of it has titles like "Horses gallop," "Car chase," and generic things like that. Looks like his wife renewed every damn thing he ever did! (Don't know if that's even legal to do on a work for hire.) Since these were all renewed in the '80's, and since she hasn't complained about Attack of the Giant Leeches, Beast from Haunted Cave, Rocky Jones, Racket Squad, The Amazing Mr. X,
Midnight Manhunt, Scared Stiff, The Great Flamarion, Dangerous Passage or One Body Too Many falling into the public domain, then we're probably okay.
I'd speculate that she put together an album of her husband's music and renewed the copyrights to cover it, but I don't know enough to make a judgement.
Sorry for the fuss.

And as Emily Litella also said, "It's always something...if it's not one thing, it's another!" Hah! ;)

Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
The Great Flamarion (to state the obvious) was 1945.
You know. It's entirely possible that Mrs. Laszlo, 30 years after renewing already 30 to 40 year old copyrights in the 80s (that make 60 to 70 year old copyrights, roughly, as of this year), is herself now no longer among the living and thus, there may be no one around to enforce copyright.
Just stating a plausible, but grim possibility.

Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
Since Lazlo did the music for
Attack of the Giant Leeches and Rocky Jones TV show and movies, and if the copyright for the music for those wasn't renewed, then I wouldn't think so.

Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
I recognize Lazlo's musical style from other movies, and the score's renewal looks legit, so this movie is still under copyright. Oh well...

Are you sure that the monster costume was the same one used in
Teenage Caveman? They certainly do look similar.

It's the same costume, plus or minus some little extras.

Re: Please move to scifi/horror |
Just like seeing the She Creature suit in "The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow". Some small differences but the same suit. Corman re-used AIP monster suits a few times, so did AIP. In "Pajama Party" with Tommy Kirk the suits from "The Eye Creatures" were used.
